Why colours look different on screen and in print, and what to do about it.
You design a flyer in vibrant blue. It looks great on your laptop. The print comes back purple. This is the most common colour problem in print, and it is caused by the difference between two colour models.
What RGB is
RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue. It is an additive colour model — combining the three creates white. Screens use RGB because they emit light: each pixel is a tiny combination of red, green, and blue light.
RGB has a wide colour range. It can represent very bright, very saturated colours that are impossible to print.
What CMYK is
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (black). It is a subtractive colour model — combining the four creates black. Printers use CMYK because they work with ink on paper: each layer of ink absorbs certain wavelengths of light.
CMYK has a narrower colour range than RGB. Some RGB colours — especially bright blues, vibrant greens, and saturated oranges — cannot be reproduced in CMYK.
Why the shift happens
When you design in RGB and print in CMYK, the printer has to convert the RGB colours to their nearest CMYK equivalents. Some colours translate well. Others shift significantly.
A bright electric blue (RGB) becomes a duller blue (CMYK) because CMYK cannot reproduce the same intensity.
How to manage it
Design in CMYK from the start: If you know the final output is print, use CMYK colour values. The design will look duller on screen (because screens use RGB) but will print closer to what you see.
Use the print preview: Print Studio's export preview shows the CMYK rendering. If a colour shifts dramatically, choose a more print-friendly version of the colour.
Pick print-safe colours: Stick to colours that exist in both RGB and CMYK. Avoid the brightest blues, greens, and oranges. Earth tones, muted colours, and most pastels are safe.
Test print: For colour-critical work, do a small test print before committing to a full run.
When RGB-only colours are unavoidable
If your design includes a photo, the photo is in RGB. The CMYK conversion will affect it. Photos generally translate well, but very bright or saturated photos will shift. Use the print preview to check.

Can my printer do RGB?
No. All commercial printers use CMYK or a variation of it. The conversion happens before the printer sees the data.
Is there a way to make RGB colours print correctly?
No. If the colour is outside the CMYK range, the printer cannot produce it. The closest CMYK match is the best you can do.
What is a colour profile?
A colour profile is a file that tells the software how to interpret colour values. sRGB is the most common screen profile. Adobe RGB is wider. SWOP and FOGRA are common print profiles.
