ID cards and event badges share many design principles. This article covers the essentials.

Standard sizes

• CR80 (standard ID) — 85.6 x 53.98 mm, the same size as a credit card
• Lanyard badge — typically 105 x 148 mm (A6) or smaller
• Name tag — 75 x 100 mm or similar

The size depends on the use. CR80 is right for photo ID cards. Larger sizes work for event badges worn on lanyards.

What to include

For an ID card:

• Full name — large, prominent
• Photo — high-resolution headshot
• Role or department — if applicable
• ID number — small, in a corner
• Organisation name or logo — branding
• Issue and expiry dates — if applicable

For an event badge:

• Full name — large enough to read from 2-3 metres
• Organisation or company — secondary
• Role or title — if relevant
• A clear visual identifier — colour, badge type, or QR code

Layout

A standard ID card layout:

• Front: photo, name, role, organisation
• Back: ID number, barcode, contact details, or terms

A standard event badge:

• Top: organisation or event name
• Middle: large name
• Bottom: role, optional QR code

Print quality

• 300 DPI for photos
• Set 3 mm bleed for full-coverage designs
• Use 300-400 GSM cardstock or PVC for durability
• For CR80, print on a card printer or use a print shop
• For larger badges, A4 or A5 print on heavy paper

Practical tips

• Use high-contrast text for names — readable from a distance
• Add a clear visual hierarchy — name first, details second
• Test print one badge before doing a full run
• Consider lanyard hole position if you are including one
