Using layers

Why ink strokes vanish when switching tools or saving, and how to preserve them.

My drawing/ink strokes disappeared

Most common reasons

Layer is hidden or locked

Check the layers panel. Pencil and highlighter strokes are raster — they live on their own layer. If the layer is hidden (eye icon off) or locked (lock icon on), the strokes will not be visible.

Click the eye icon to show the layer, and the lock icon to unlock it.

Wrong layer selected

New strokes are always added to the currently selected layer. If you are drawing on a layer that is hidden, the strokes appear invisible.

Before drawing, click the layer where you want the strokes to appear.

Saved in a format that flattens raster layers

If you saved the project as a JPG or PNG (not the native HDPrint format), raster layers are flattened and the original strokes may be lost if saved again.

Use File -> Save as to save in the native HDPrint format, which preserves all layer data.

Recovering strokes

If the strokes are still in the undo stack, press ⌘/Ctrl + Z repeatedly to step back until they reappear. The undo stack holds the last 100 actions.
